Alicia Keys Tells Gotham Mag: "I am New York"

On Hell's Kitchen, her old neighborhood:
"You know, it's amazing to see a neighborhood change. When I was growing up, it was way darker, way more dismal, way more like the place where all the outcasts lived. So now, to see it more of like a tourist destination is really interesting ... But one thing it always had was those bright lights, and it did always have endless possibilities ..."

On her affinity for hair flair:
"In this particular shoot I just really wanted to emanate power and simplicity from within. I love very big, beautiful neck pieces. I love head wraps -- I'm a head-wrap fanatic!"

A little encouragement goes a long way:
"I had a couple of good teachers who [told me],'You can do this; you can succeed at this with practice. And not with just music -- with anything you put your mind to.'"

Women Talk Sports: A-Rod at Gotham Magazine cover party

May 17, 2010

NY Yankees third baseman, Alex Rodriguez, stepped out in NYC this weekend to celebrate his Gotham magazine cover.
The Yankee slugger is featured in the May issue.
Fashion house DKNY sponsored A-Rod's Gotham issue and cover party, which isn't too surprising considering the brand recently signed a long term sponsorship deal with the Yankees.
The big surprise actually came when Alex revealed his arm candy for the evening. Fans have been keeping a close eye on the battle between his blondes, Kate Hudson and Cameron Diaz. But this leading lady was brunette and a bit younger. Rodriguez brought his 5-year old daughter, Natasha, as his date. While he successfully avoided most personal questions, he did admit that he was nervous because Natasha was wearing her first pair of high heels. Maybe Dad can help the future fashionista land a job with DKNY some day.

Here is the Bronx Bomber looking sharp on the Red Carpet:

And you can see the full Gotham article here. While it might not be DKNY this time around, Alex sports looks like the ones below from top designers including Gucci, Hugo Boss and Ralph Lauren.

Urban Spin: Alicia Keys on cover of Gotham

What a refreshing cover! Check out Miss Keys looking simple yet classy for the March issue of Gotham magazine. The 29-year-old looks stunning in a Catherine Malandrino dress and Robert Lee Morris jewels. June Ambrose is the stylist responsible for this beautiful look.
Keys, who is preparing to go on tour later this month, revealed in a recent interview with Insider, that she is more than ready. "I'm approaching touring in the same way I approached the record, so there's a nice balance in there. I tour and I'm on the road for, like, two years straight."

And of course, like you all, I'm patiently waiting for the release of her new video, "Put It In A Love Song" featuring Beyonce...Can't wait!

Janet Jackson Opens Up About Michael's Death

Janet Jackson hasn't had much time to deal with the unexpected death of her brother Michael Jackson in June. After a memorial service for the King of Pop, Janet went straight to work filming Why Did I Get Married Too?, but she says her acting gig was "kind of therapeutic" in helping her grieve. "It was a good way for me to move forward and stay busy," Janet tells Gotham magazine in their January/February issue. "When you hear people say life goes on, it's really the truth. You can't stop living. It becomes a part of you." Janet says there are some days that are harder than others but, "I have to keep my life going." In keeping with that spirit, Janet is working on a new album and is writing a book. "It's not an autobiography, but there are little anecdotes that I give here and there from my childhood all the way to the present that I thought would be interesting and helpful to share." She adds, "I hope it's inspiring for all ages."

Kim Kardashian launching The Kim Kardashian Vanilla Cupcake Mix at The Famous Cupcakes store in Beverly Hills

Last month, while hosting Ocean Drive magazine's 17th anniversary party in Miami, Kim Kardashian refused to take a picture in front of a cake made of 100 mini-cupcakes. Kim's excuse was that she had a cupcake deal and couldn't take a picture with a competing product. Turns out she wasn't kidding. Her new cupcake line -- "The Kim Kardashian Vanilla Cupcake Mix" -- launched late last week in Beverly Hills. And the cool thing is you can eat as many as you want because Kim also promotes the QuickTrim 14-day Diet System.
