Alicia Keys Tells Gotham Mag: "I am New York"

With the explosive success of Alicia Keys' latest album, the world is in an Alicia state of mind. And while the born-and-bred New Yorker travels the world performing and promoting her new work, Gotham magazine had the opportunity to interview the songstress for their March issue (on stands March 1). And they took some jaw-dropping photos of Alicia to boot. Click through to check 'em out, then go to Gotham's Web site for more.

Alicia Keys Tells Gotham Mag: "I am New York"

On Hell's Kitchen, her old neighborhood:
"You know, it's amazing to see a neighborhood change. When I was growing up, it was way darker, way more dismal, way more like the place where all the outcasts lived. So now, to see it more of like a tourist destination is really interesting ... But one thing it always had was those bright lights, and it did always have endless possibilities ..."

Alicia Keys Tells Gotham Mag: "I am New York"
On her affinity for hair flair:
"In this particular shoot I just really wanted to emanate power and simplicity from within. I love very big, beautiful neck pieces. I love head wraps -- I'm a head-wrap fanatic!"

Alicia Keys Tells Gotham Mag: "I am New York"
A little encouragement goes a long way:
"I had a couple of good teachers who [told me],'You can do this; you can succeed at this with practice. And not with just music -- with anything you put your mind to.'"

Women Talk Sports: A-Rod at Gotham Magazine cover party

May 17, 2010

NY Yankees third baseman, Alex Rodriguez, stepped out in NYC this weekend to celebrate his Gotham magazine cover.
The Yankee slugger is featured in the May issue.
Fashion house DKNY sponsored A-Rod's Gotham issue and cover party, which isn't too surprising considering the brand recently signed a long term sponsorship deal with the Yankees.
The big surprise actually came when Alex revealed his arm candy for the evening. Fans have been keeping a close eye on the battle between his blondes, Kate Hudson and Cameron Diaz. But this leading lady was brunette and a bit younger. Rodriguez brought his 5-year old daughter, Natasha, as his date. While he successfully avoided most personal questions, he did admit that he was nervous because Natasha was wearing her first pair of high heels. Maybe Dad can help the future fashionista land a job with DKNY some day.

Here is the Bronx Bomber looking sharp on the Red Carpet:

And you can see the full Gotham article here. While it might not be DKNY this time around, Alex sports looks like the ones below from top designers including Gucci, Hugo Boss and Ralph Lauren.

Keys, who is preparing to go on tour later this month, revealed in a recent interview with Insider, that she is more than ready. "I'm approaching touring in the same way I approached the record, so there's a nice balance in there. I tour and I'm on the road for, like, two years straight."

And of course, like you all, I'm patiently waiting for the release of her new video, "Put It In A Love Song" featuring Beyonce...Can't wait!

Star: Janet Jackson Shares with Gotham

Janet Jackson Opens Up About Michael's Death

Janet Jackson hasn't had much time to deal with the unexpected death of her brother Michael Jackson in June. After a memorial service for the King of Pop, Janet went straight to work filming Why Did I Get Married Too?, but she says her acting gig was "kind of therapeutic" in helping her grieve. "It was a good way for me to move forward and stay busy," Janet tells Gotham magazine in their January/February issue. "When you hear people say life goes on, it's really the truth. You can't stop living. It becomes a part of you." Janet says there are some days that are harder than others but, "I have to keep my life going." In keeping with that spirit, Janet is working on a new album and is writing a book. "It's not an autobiography, but there are little anecdotes that I give here and there from my childhood all the way to the present that I thought would be interesting and helpful to share." She adds, "I hope it's inspiring for all ages."

Kim Kardashian launching The Kim Kardashian Vanilla Cupcake Mix at The Famous Cupcakes store in Beverly Hills

Last month, while hosting Ocean Drive magazine's 17th anniversary party in Miami, Kim Kardashian refused to take a picture in front of a cake made of 100 mini-cupcakes. Kim's excuse was that she had a cupcake deal and couldn't take a picture with a competing product. Turns out she wasn't kidding. Her new cupcake line -- "The Kim Kardashian Vanilla Cupcake Mix" -- launched late last week in Beverly Hills. And the cool thing is you can eat as many as you want because Kim also promotes the QuickTrim 14-day Diet System.

Pop Eater: What will Conan O' Brien do?

What Will Coco Do? A Guide to Conan O'Brien's Next Eight Months

It's going to be dark days ahead for Conan O'Brien. After spending 16 years doing late night programming we imagine he isn't quite sure what to do with his impending time out from behind a desk. We're here to help Coco. You have eight months ahead of you and we want you to spend them wisely. Get a tan, kick back, channel your inner Gosselin with some plastique hair, but most importantly come back in September with something new and awesome. Here's how our experts think Conan should spend the next eight months (besides swimming in his severance pay like Scrooge McDuck).

10. "Come back to New York!!!' says Samantha Marcus Yanks, editor-in-chief of Hamptons and Gotham magazines.

9. "He should be putting together a show that is completely original without limits since the Tonight Show offered so many limits for him," says "Cult of Celebrity" author Cooper Lawrence.8. "Get some hair extensions a la Kate Gosselin and let your freak flag fly," says grooming expert Margaret Kelly of Lock & Mane. "Nothing says 'Hey NBC I'm a new man and you can suck it,' like some $7 k fake hair."

7. "Conan + 8 months = Avatar 2: The Orange Tribe," says PopWrap's Ryan Brockington6. "He should spend some of his fresh $40 million on a 'selling for a loss' apartment in the Plaza or 15 CPW around February," Yanks says.5. "He should be doing what the rest of us will be doing, not watching NBC," Lawrence says.

Bethenny Frankel annouces Engagement at a Gotham Magazine Party

Jill and Bethenny’s friendship divorce seems like it’s getting closer to being final. They’ve been separated all season, and while Bethenny seemed to want to work things out, this week, she’d had enough. So far, we’ve seen Bethenny repeatedly call Jill, approach her at public functions and arrange private meetings to try and bury the hatchet. But Jill walked away, insulted her and said the damage was too deep.

It seems like Bethenny finally got the message and decided to move on. She’s seeing new friends — like Alex. She’s treating herself nicely — like getting a good boyfriend. And she finally gets what she’s always wanted: an engagement ring. Unfortunately, as soon as Jill finds out about Bethenny’s engagement — and sees that all of the other housewives, even LuAnn, have made peace with Bethenny — Jill decides she wants to come back.

When Bethenny announced her engagement at a Gotham magazine party hosted by Kelly, everyone was super excited for her. But it was like a slap in the face to Jill. You could tell that it hurt Jill when she realized Bethenny really was moving on and making a life for herself … without her former friend. Jill talked about all the things friends do together for a big life event: planning the wedding, gushing about the ring. The only thing Jill could possibly do was compliment Bethenny’s sparkler. And Bethenny, who is clearly over Jill by now, didn’t want any of it.

Gotham 's March Issue

Amber Rose Posed Clothed, With Fencers, for a Spread in the March Issue of Gotham
Olympic fencing medalists Jason Rogers and Tim Morehouse are ramping up their fashion-world invasion. Although they were not booked to walk in any of this season’s menswear shows currently happening in Paris (Louis Vuitton wanted Jason last season, but it didn't quite pan out), the Wilhelmina-signed swashbucklers just shot a photo spread with Amber Rose for Gotham magazine’s March issue. In the photos, all three are on a couch — fully clothed — with Rose between them in a beaded dress that seemed to weigh a lot, the athletes explained at the Cinema Society screening of Extraordinary Measures last night. Morehouse and Rogers were cordial with Rose during the shoot, but not overly friendly. "A few words were exchanged, some friendly, 'Hi, how are you, really love your boyfriend’s music,'" Rogers said. Morehouse clarified: “Um … how do I say it? You don’t want to mess with Kanye’s girl.”

In May, the fencing teammates will be doing a fashion and fencing event at Barneys, a benefit for Right to Play, a children’s sports organization. The event will feature photos of Rogers, Morehouse, and others engaged in the sport of fencing, and they say it’s just the start. “This is like our kickoff,” Morehouse said, although the two have already been featured in Vanity Fair and elsewhere. “We’re coming for Nacho Figueras!” he said, laughing. “We’re coming for him; we’re taking him out. Look out, Nacho! There’s two of us, and we have swords.” They were not specific about which label or fragrance they are particularly interested in endorsing. “We’ll take anything,” they said.

If Rogers were to partake in the Winter Olympics, he would like to do fencing on ice skates. "I think it’s viable. I mean, figure skating is viable, everybody loves figure skating," he said. "We could put on the sequined outfits, and that’s what makes it more interesting. The sparkly outfits would bring more attention to the sport, it would certainly be more glamorous — you know, can you imagine a guy with a sword and sequins in the lights? I mean, that’s just fabulous."

NBC New York: Kristin Wiig Gotham Cover Girl

May 18, 2010

"SNL" Comic Kristen Wiig: My Life Now Is "Surreal"

"Saturday Night Live" wrapped this week but that didn't stop cast members like Seth Meyers, Andy Samberg and Jenny Slate from congregating at The Roosevelt Hotel last night to party with their co-worker Kristen Wiig as she celebrated being cover girl of Gotham Magazine.

"I'm having one of those days today where I'm like, 'How did I get here? What's happening?'" Wiig gushed. "Just coming from sketch comedy on a stage in LA, and now I'm here.

She added, "It's surreal." It's obvious that the "MacGruber" starlet's meteoric rise has done little to keep her from being grounded. In the case of becoming Hollywood's next leading lady, she assured us that she's waiting for the right time.

"Of course I'm listening to the offers," Wiig said. "I've always said I'd take a small role in a great movie over a large role in one that I don't believe in."

In a flowing blue summer dress, the comic also shared with Niteside the secret to photographing well during the cover shoot with Bell Soto.

"I take exclusively over-the-shoulder shots," she said.

Her technique seems to have worked because the results were getting quite a few nods from her fellow "SNL" castmates. Kristen told us the most nerve-racking part was waiting to see the final product.

"I am my harshest critic but I'm really happy with it!"

Niche Media CEO Jason Binn and Gotham Magazine editor Samantha Yanks were also thrilled with the results at the release party.

After a generous amount of flattery on how amazing she looked in the Niche Media-owned title, Niteside asked Wiig on her optioning of "Clown Girl" and her plans to star in the film.

"I fell in love with that book before I was even a third of the way through. She (Monica Drake) is just such an interesting writer and I've fallen in love the material. I just hope I can do it justice."
Wiig soon ran over to the VIP area to join her boyfriend Brian Pestos for some Grey Goose-sponsored drinks.

Cameron Diaz vs A-Rod's idea of Commitment

May 17, 2010

Cameron Diaz Is 'Not Afraid Of Commitment' But A-Rod Keeps It Casual

Cameron Diaz recently sat down with Parade to discuss the romance in "Shrek" and her views on love. From this and A-Rod's recent interview, it doesn't sound like they are on the same page.
Diaz shared her formula for a great relationship:

"I think that the rules in relationships are: no tricks, honesty, communication, treat people the way you want to be treated, unconditional love. Those are the things that I think are important. But, you know, rules are made to be broken."

If Diaz is thinking marriage with rumored beau, Alex Rodriguez, she better hold on to her veil. Us Magazine caught up with the Yankee at Saturday's (May 15) Gotham Magazine party in his honor, where A-Rod revealed that he has no plans to wed anytime soon!

We have more from player A-Rod, after the jump!

Rodriguez also shrugged off questions regarding his relationship with Cameron and when asked if he's enjoying his single life, said:

"To be honest, our schedule is so busy that you really don't have time to enjoy it."
We're not sure what to make of that response!

At least Cameron has a good head on her shoulders. She had this to say about her future relationships:

"I am a romantic. I love romance. I'm not afraid of commitment. I commit to everything I'm doing and I am hopelessly loyal. But I hate predicting the future, I really do, because you just don't know. I can't even make up my mind what I'm going to do this weekend."

MTV News: Alicia Keys on cover of Gotham

February 23, 2010

Alicia Keys Explains Why Love Is Theme Of The Element of Freedom

'It's the one thing we can all understand,' singer told Gotham magazine.

In addition to announcing her North American tour dates on Friday, Alicia Keys recently posed for the cover of Gotham magazine's spring issue, which hits stands March 1.

Keys donned two looks in the photo shoot, one a green drop-neck gown accented with a gold collar necklace, the other a light blue one-shoulder dress complemented by a head wrap. (Wonderwall.msn.com) has more photos from the shoot.) The New York native talked with the
publication about the changes in her old neighborhood of Hell's Kitchen, as well as love as the theme for her new album, The Element of Freedom.

"When I was growing up, [Hell's Kitchen] was way darker, more dismal and more like the place where all the outcasts lived," recalls Keys. "So now, to see it more like a tourist destination is really interesting. Even though Eighth Avenue was supergrungy with drug needles, Broadway always had those bright lights and it did always have endless possibilities."

As compared with the subject matter of her previous three albums, Songs in A Minor, The Diary of Alicia Keys and As I Am, Element focuses quite a bit on love, relationships and sustaining courtship's spark against all odds.

"Love does play a prominent role in the album because I believe love is the most important thing in the world," Keys said. "It's the one thing we can all understand."

Keys recently filmed a clip for her duet with fellow R&B powerhouse Beyoncé, "Put It in a Love Song," in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The video is set to premiere on March 8. In addition, the singer/songwriter kicks off the North American leg of her Freedom tour on February 26 with two days in Canada before traveling stateside to Chicago. Robin Thicke and Melanie Fiona will serve as openers for Keys. The international leg of the tour begins on April 29, with the dates to be announced.

Micah Jesse: Alicia Keys Gotham Cover Girl

February 22, 2010

Alicia Keys: I’m A Gotham Magazine Cover Girl!

R&B diva Alicia Keys graces the March 2010 cover of Gotham Magazine and dishes about love, her hit Empire State song, and sings praises of her hometown of NYC:

On being raised in Hell’s Kitchen: March cover-star Alicia Keys reveals to Gotham magazine about the rough neighborhood of Clinton New York that she grew up and reflects on how its changed, saying “When I was growing up, it was way darker, way more dismal, way more like the place where all the outcasts lived. So now, to see it more like a tourist destination is really interested,” the song-bird admits.

On how the Broadway lights inspired her as a child: Keys’ reflects on her more rags than riches childhood but tells the March issue of Gotham mag that while growing up the bright light keep her going, telling the mag that the one thing she always had was “those bright lights and it did always have endless possibilities, because Broadway was so close. Even thought Eight Avenue was supergrungy-drug needles and all kinds of dingy things- Broadway was a lot more creative and interesting and possible.”

On her collaboration with Jay-Z: Element, like Alicia Key’s previous four albums hit number one thanks in part to her collaboration with Jay-Z on New York City’s new anthem Empire State of Mind. Keys recorded a less bombastic more introspective extensive of the original and Keys tells the March issue of Gotham mag that “Now they [both versions] have a life of their own, so it’s really beautiful.”

On the most important thing in the world: A true romantic, Alicia Keys admits that the theme of Element is love, lost, and found explaining to Gotham mag that “love does play a prominent role in the album because I believe love is the most important thing in the world,” Keys says. “It’s the one thing we can all understand.”
